Me gustas cuando callas...
Thank you babar for making me read this!:) it is just...WOW!
Pablo Neruda - I Like For You To Be Still
I like for you to be still
It is as though you are absent
And you hear me from far away
And my voice does not touch you
It seems as though your eyes had flown away
And it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth
As all things are filled with my soul
You emerge from the things
Filled with my soul
You are like my soul
A butterfly of dream
And you are like the word: Melancholy
I like for you to be still
And you seem far away
It sounds as though you are lamenting
A butterfly cooing like a dove
And you hear me from far away
And my voice does not reach you
Let me come to be still in your silence
And let me talk to you with your silence
That is bright as a lamp
Simple, as a ring
You are like the night
With its stillness and constellations
Your silence is that of a star
As remote and candid
I like for you to be still
It is as though you are absent
Distant and full of sorrow
So you would've died
One word then,
One smile is enough
And I'm happy;
Happy that it's not true.

Oh Man you made me feel still for a moment, I really love this piece.
That thing about the sould is so touching without touching in real.
Wa jawab hi nahi!
lovely to know someone in Pakistan that likes Neruda. :)
:) i havent read any other pieces by him....but this is just amaazingly beautiful....
im so sorry but i is not liking deep poetry these days.. plz bring me something superficial :)
Is this the right translation?
I thought me gustas cuando callas meant,
I like you when you're quiet.
There are a bunch of translations for this poem. I recommend reading all of them to get the full meaning.
hi, i found your blog because i'd been looking for a copy of this pablo neruda's poem... you also like his works... i think we have something in common. nice blog... :)
"Me gustas cuando callas porque estas como ausente"
"I like you when you are silent, because you are like absent" is the literal tranlation to Neruda's line
Prizepurple jellyfish,
You perhaps should read Neruda's "Poema20",I recommend to read more than one tranlation, as some have errors, an example:
A Uni professor in USA translated
"La noche esta estrellada" 'The night is a starry night" as the night is "smashed" (as a car wreck)) using a valid meaning but wrong for the word "estrellada"
